IPP Media reports: France supports water, sanitation programmes

2007-05-31 09:28:40
By Christina Mwangosi

France will provide 7.5bn/- in debt relief to Tanzania and fund water supply and sanitation projects in Bukoba and Musoma worth 12bn/-, under an agreement signed in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The agreement was signed by Finance minister Zakia Meghji and the French Ambassador to Tanzania, Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, at a short ceremony held at the ministry of finance.

Further excerpts from the news report:

……the money released from the arrangement would be directed into financing the national Secondary Education Development Programme under the basket funding framework…….

……Meghji explained further that the support would help the government accelerate implementation of the National Water Policy, “thus contributing to the overall improvement of health conditions of the people in the Bukoba and Musoma municipalities through the provision of clean, safe and reliable water and sanitation services“. ……

From the report it appears that the funding is via an Education Development Programme, which should not only alleviate the water problems in Musoma and Bukoba, but also may help improve the educational infrastructure in these Lake Victoria municipalities.

This may also help to some extent to the various charity projects taken up and efficiently overseen by Dr Manjul Vasant. Details of these projects can be seen at Musoma.Com
